Benfotiamine, which is converted to thiamine in the liver, whas developed in the 1960's as a fat-soluable form of the vitamin that is far earier to absorb that thiamine.  Several neurological diseases have been related to thiamine deficiency, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and even ALS.   Thiamine deficiency is diabetes, especially the insulin-dependent (type 1) form of the disease.  Peripheral neuropathy, kidneys, and retina disease, aas well as heart and vascular diseases associated withe diabetes, have been drastically improved by thiamine, especially by using benfotiamine.
